AUTOMAT is pleased to present A Gorgeous Whole I Never Was, a solo show by Baltimore-based artist Ringo Lisko, curated by member Jacqueline Yvonne Tull.

Lisko’s multidisciplinary practice calls into question the role of the body, its relationship with material, and the ways in which objects can become an archive of memory through bodily action. A Gorgeous Whole I Never Was, referencing Julietta Singh’s text No Archive Will Restore You, is a simultaneous search for human wholeness and an embrace of the multiplicity of the human condition, its pain and its hopes.

Ringo Lisko (she/they) is an artist originally from Gallup, NM. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and drawing from the University of Alabama in 2020, and her Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Rinehart School of Sculpture in 2024.

Lisko has shown nationally and internationally, with recent exhibitions including the 2023 National Conference of Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices (NCCCIAP) Biennial Exhibition; WorthMore/WorthLess, K.L.8 Exhibition Space, Brussels, Belgium; and the Feminist Biennial, Women Made Gallery, Chicago, IL.

Lisko lives and works between Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. Alongside her practice, she is the founding director of spare room gallery, an artist-run collaborative in Baltimore, MD. She is currently Head of Facilities at the Kreeger Museum in Washington, D.C.
