Recent Relics and Re-Placed Sites

Recent Relics and Re-Placed Sites examines the role that our personal filters of identity, ethnicity, and generation play in interpreting and relating to historical markers, both incidental and characteristic. Oaxacan weaving techniques, cell phone photography, and traditional quilting in the American South demonstrate modes of making, collecting and documenting specific to time and place. While forging relationships with their neighbors, makers, and viewers, these works present a memory or collective experience in a subjective, accessible, moldable space.

The perceived gap between present and past becomes compressed as modes of presentation and formal similarity cause slippage between artifact, craft, contemporary art object and picture plane, asking us to consider how our own personal experience of the world shapes the way that information is presented and consumed.
