The directors of ORTEGA y GASSET PROJECTS:
December 2, 2016 - January 8, 2017
Exhibition Opening: Friday, December 2, 6 - 10 pm
A wide array of styles and art historical considerations are swept up into the exhibition of Serious Play,
presented by AUTOMAT Collective. Throughout this selection of work by the Brooklyn-based collective, Ortega y Gasset Projects, we see the arrangement of diverse elements of varying content and material distinction. To follow each mark, and decision, conjures an impression of a fervent hand and unfolding mind. The playful visual energy and the unexpected and sometimes critical reflections that emerge are found to be the result of careful consideration and focus. So with imagery and objects that initially assuage comfort in their benign and common nature, like milk crates, musical notes, children's schoolbook pages, a clownishly painted shoe, etc., these works use them as a part of a broader critical and expressive project. The familiar then can be made awkward, in effect, to engage the viewer in a more rigorous formal and conceptual way.
This exhibition is part of a curatorial exchange with Ortega y Gasset Projects to share ideas and generate artistic dialogue through the reciprocal collaborative approaches of our artist-run spaces. Ortega y Gasset Projects will present Philly Caj,an exhibition of works by members of AUTOMAT Collective, on view December 10, 2016 – January 15, 2017, with an opening reception on Saturday, December 10, 6-9pm.
