Automat presents And, an exhibition by Jamey Hart, curated by Steve Basel.

And gathers a small and specific selection of paintings, each with a distinct sound, given space to voice that sound and equal space fade out in the transitions between them. Hartʼs practice focuses tightly on the idea of the singular object, complete and compact, while embracing some connectivity between the paintings that canʼt ever seem to dissolved. Because in opposing something you automatically recall that thing through the negation of it. It is like an afterimage.

The wonder is in how this process can expand paintings vocabulary to have the ability to include everything without ever feeling broken or separate, and with enough space, the feeling is that this is possible.

“Where only at the beginning

is it bucolic and angelic,

because soon one group

will mix with the other

and it won't be certain

whose are, ah, whose are

these rocks and flowers,

cheers and sticks.”

-Szymborska
